Note: this posting had last years dates, and it has now been updated for 2012/2013. September 11th, 2012, is the very first day of Junior Classes for the Westside German School. The classes are then held weekly until December 19th. On one Tuesday the students will attend the German Christmas Market downtown to perform traditional German Christmas songs. In between, there will be a Lantern Festival, where the children make their own lanterns and practice “Ich Geh Mit Meiner Laterne” and other similar songs. Attending German School allows children to not just learn a language, but also learn something about the culture and history. Another important aspect is that children can make friends with other German-speaking children, to see that they are not the only ones who speak a different language.
As a viewer of AhornTV, I assume that you are somehow a German-speaker living in Canada, whether you are from Austria, Germany or Switzerland and if you have children, will surely want them to learn to speak the language. The Westside German School is only one of 5 schools in Metro Vancouver. Others include the North Shore German School, the Richmond Kids Richmond, Surrey German Language School and finally, the Vancouver German School presently taking place in the Vancouver Alpenclub on Wednesday afternoons.
New to this article: On Monday mornings, the St. Mark’s Church offers German language instruction (1573 E. 18th/Knight Street) for 2-5-year-olds. Andrea Mechler is the coordinator of the group.
